Government figures estimate there are around 19 fatal and 880 non-fatal shock accidents each year in the workplace. In the home, the figures are slightly different; around 10 fatal and 2,000 non-fatal electric shock accidents. There are 12,000 domestic fires with an electrical cause, and an average 4,000 electrical fires which break out every year in Britain's commercial buildings.

Some 75% of firms with major electrical fires NEVER RECOVER.

Many incidents are caused by faulty appliances, thereby proving the need for PAT testing. Cables, switches and socket outlets also deteriorate with prolonged use, so it is essential they are inspected and maintained regularly.

The Electrical Safety Council (www.esc.org.uk) published the results of their National Consumer Survey and discovered the following:

  • 42% of consumers stated they had never had their electrics checked
  • 32% of consumers surveyed whom had DIY experience stated they had received one or more electric shocks whilst carrying out DIY
  • 59% of people do not use qualified electricians when carrying out electrical work
  • 35% of consumers surveyed said their electrics are over 15 years old
  • 21% stated they had no idea how old their electrics were
  • 48% of those surveyed did not know that their electrics should be checked at least every 10 years (domestic)

The figures speak for themselves, and we must remember that legislation states:

It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees.

And:

As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.
